JSTestKnife Forging Video - Full length
This is the full process of forging my JS test knife, t here is only one cut in the footage right after I forge the tip, and before I start forging the bevels. After that cut, there is no cuts or edits for the entirety of the forging process. The video does cut out at the end, but it was just as I was finishing planishing the handle and that was the last heat of the process anyway.

ABS Journeyman Smith Test Knife - First Try
Переглядів 266Рік тому
I am working on my American Bladesmith Society Journeyman Smith rating and in order to achieve this my first task is to forge a knife capable of surviving the blade test. This test requires that your blade be able to cut a 1" thick hanging rope in once slice, chop through a 2x4 twice, shave hair off of your arm afterwards, and then be bent in a vice to 90 degrees without breaking. In this video...

      It's just 12" duct pipe. Believe it or not, the pipe doesn't get very hot. This is galvenized pipe that's been used for several years and hasn't even got hot enough to mess up the finish.

    Was the stump sunk into the ground as well? Because that definitely helps. Also, silicone between the anvil & base works great at deadening noise as well as eliminating lost energy from anvil movement while forging.

    That was fantastic! I’m building a new forge and plan to use the super sucker concept. I like the traditional hood look, and will likely build something similar to your modified hood solution! It’s good to know the hood “depth” can be extended , as I would like to run the horizontal thru the wall behind the forge, then turn vertical outside the building to avoid the roof penetration completely! Thanks for posting and providing inspiration to proceed on with my “traditional” approach to my period smithy.

    Do you ever have the silver split? I am trying hand forging small pieces of scrap and am not sure how often to heat it to hammer it

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge 8 місяців тому

      Yes, silver will work harden and split on you pretty quick if you don't anneal it. When it starts getting shiny, it's work hardening. Heat it up until it's dull again and it's okay to start hammering again. Be on the lookout, it hardens fast under the hammer.

    Not knocking you but I learned this all the way back in the 8th grade. You get a bit more wham for your strike if you do not choke up on the hammer so tight. Let the inertia do twice the work as your muscles, it's hard to relearn a bad habit, but it will help your arm in the long run.

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge Рік тому

      What I'm going for during most of this video is fine control, and you get way more control when doing finer detail work, like beveling, when you choke up on the handle. Not everything is about power, my friend.

    I’ve never heard of auto tempering. Is this some kind of air hardening steel temper? Cool video man. I haven’t tried to make a hammer yet but researching now.

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge Рік тому

      Not air hardening, this is 4140. The hammer face is hardened in oil, but just the face, not the whole hammer head, then the residual heat from the body of the hammer head is used to temper the faces, instead of having to heat the entire hammer up again.

    Really great video as I'm just looking at building a super sucker. Couple of Qs if that's ok. How close to the firepot does it need to be? Just thinking of working space in the fire? And can it be slightly above the level of the fire? Can you tell me the rough dimensions of the sucker box you used? Thanks

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge Рік тому

      Hi Damian, you generally want your super sucker to be in fairly close proximity to the fire you wouldn't want the center of the fire to be more than a foot away from the entrance of the super sucker, and yes, it can be a bit above the level of the fire. As for the box in this video, it's roughly 12"x12"x12" with a 10" pipe flange, the box entrance is roughly 10" sqaure.

    In your opinion, how long (or how many rr spike knives) does it take for an apprentice who takes 2 hours the 1st time to 45 minutes?

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge 2 роки тому

      That depends on the apprentice, how fast they learn, and how well they develop their hammer technique. Once taught the proper technique a competent apprentice should be able to get it down to 45 minutes by their 8th - 10th spike knife, IMO.

    What propane line pressure are you running with blown? With my T-rexes I usually have to go 10-15 lbs for most things.

    • @Wolfsdenforge
      @Wolfsdenforge 2 роки тому

      This forced air rig has a huge orifice so it's only running like 3lbs but it's wide open, there's almost no restriction to line pressure in the system, it's basically dumping straight out of the tank as fast as it can. I really should do something about that, it's serious overkill.
